A few more gates on the way to town...

You'd think, for as long as I've been posting fence and gate photos, I would have exhausted all of the gates along the 12 mile drive into town. But, nay, I say to you. This is Texas - the land of endless fences and gates, apparently. Here's a few more from the road to 'town' (aka gas station and grocery store) that I've not shared with you before.
This one is simple, but is rarely closed. Usually they just rely on the cattle guard to keep the cattle in without too much regard for keeping people out.

Several of you have remarked before on the irony of a gate that says "Welcome" but remains locked. I like it. :)

I like the patriotism, here.

And then there's the state pride, of course, along with support for "America's Team."

Probably the 'welcome sign' is for their visitors to know they have arrived!! strange to welcome and keep gate closed.
My gate is open most of the time.
I enjoy seeing your photos of gates and barns and your fantastic photos of the birds and wild life..
happy days Tex. Thank you

i like the one with the cowboy and cowgirl, that is a great gate... and bob would love the last one since he is a die hard Dallas cowboys fan, has been since the beginning. he has a couple of DC shirts and our dog max had one.... he had a DC sweatshirt when we got married and when it started to fall apart i wanted to toss it, NO was the answer.

I love coming home and seeing everyone's gates. We've stopped and taken picturs of few in the past. Thanks or sharing and giving me pieces of "home".

These are great! I have a question for you tho. I know most of the gates are to keep cattle in but you see some fences and gates that don't have cattle, and aren't ranches. Are they used to keep people out?

the 'welcome' gate should have an addendum which reads 'but call first'

I like the flag, too. After 34 years of living here I have finally gotten my flag pole - and a big one at that. Before we had to hang our flag from the portico. Now we have a flag pole appropriately set in a stone base. Of course, this was all designed by My Honey and installed by our friend, Bill the Home Builder.

Dearest Theresa,
Texas is a State of EXAMPLE and it shows. You once again captured that beautifully. That's about the road length to town for our friends that have to drive alongside the river for crossing at the only bridge and than into town. We live only a couple of miles apart in birds eye view... There will be another bridge so we could bike over!
Hugs,
Mariette

Gates everywhere. I started noticing the fencing once we crossed the Mississippi. It's everywhere out here.

Gail Dixon (Louisiana Belle) said...

I like gates and fences too. I like the ones with an archway. I do think gates are restricting though---to the owners and the visitor. . If there are 3 sitting in a truck a true cowboy sits in the middle-- well he is closer to the radio and he doesn't have to get out to open a gate.

I love gates. Whenever we visit Central or Eastern Oregon I'm always enchanted by the gates to the ranches. I often wonder what is at the end of the road! I would love to have a fence with a nice gate in front of my house but my sweetheart thinks gates are unwelcoming. He thinks they say, 'Stay away!' I disagree and I told him a 'Welcome' sign on the gate would fix that!

I thought there was some sort of design on the top of that first gate until I enlarged the photo and realized that I was seeing the roof of a house that was partially hidden by a rise in the ground. Love the last one, with the "God Bless Texas" and the "Dallas Cowboys Dr" sign.

I always enjoy seeing gates like that.

The top one is similar to the one I see on my way to work I keep promising to share (only one wheel tho) I really must park up and take a pic of it.

I think that you could probably get a new fence every day, every week, for years living in cattle and horse country...and they are always so interesting. Very different from our white and black fencing here in KY~

I love that you take the time to stop and take pictures of these fabulous gates. It makes one wonder about the families who live on these ranches. Where do those long roads lead, who lives there, what are their lives like and so on.

I, too, am surprised you haven't run out of fences in that 12-mile stretch. Pretty much my entire impression of Texas is coming from your blog. And, that's a good thing :) There are interesting figures at each side of the gate in the 2nd picture. I couldn't see them clearly but thought they were partly human and partly beast.

Question from a non-rancher--do cattle guards really work? And no shortage of Texas pride here, is there?

Oh, also meant to say that I do not have a welcome mat, nor gate at my house because it would be false advertising. Hate drop ins! Too much pressure on the cleaning lady--me!
